Today’s Blog Post:

Today, I asked you to come to class ready to talk about your favorite song. For the next five to seven minutes, I want you to write a well developed paragraph (6-8 sentences) on the following topic: What is your favorite song, and why is it your favorite song. If you need help posting, please let me know.

Group Work:

When you are done posting, I want you to get into a small group (3 people, no more or less). Introduce yourself, and begin to discuss what your favorite song is, and why it is your favorite song.

Class Lesson:

Major Lesson for the Day #1: When songs have lyrics, they can be considered poetry. If you like music, surprise!, you probably are more of a poetry fan than you know.

Important Question:

How do I understand the meaning of a song?

There are two basic levels of understanding songs and other forms of literature

Experience: The “experience” of literature is often felt, and not articulated with any specificity. It is essentially a determination of whether or not you “like” or “do not like” something.

Interpretation: When we interpret literature, we focus on specific detail in it, and describe the connections between these details.

Specific details includes subjects such as:

  • Sensory Details
  • Images
  • Detailed Descriptions of Things

Today, we are going to being an interpretation of a poem by reading it and then focusing on its specific details:

Let’s look at Robert Frosts’ “Stopping By Woods on A Snowy Evening”

10) What are the specific things (people, places, ect..) that are being discussed in this poem?

1
2
3
ect…

11) What are some questions that we might come up with about these specific things?

1
2
3
ect…

Read for next Class:

Emily Dickenson’s “I’m Nobody! Who are you?
Edwin Arlington Robinson’s “Miniver Cheevy
Walt Whitman’s “I Hear America Singing”

Write:

1 Page interpretation of one of the assigned poems.

Also, post to this class one paragraph (6-8 sentences) on your experience of your favorite or least favrotie T.V. show or movie.

  2. My favorite song is All Summer long by kid rock. I enjoy this song mostly because it tells a story that most people my age live. i love when summer comes and there is more to do around town. Its as if my lifestyle changes dramtically and i find myself overwhelmed with plans for my days and weeks, whereas in the winter time i do a lot of nights in and movies. I also find myself changed in a way that i am more daring, or i do things more often and i am not worried about the things i have to do the next day like i would during the Winter and Spring time, becuase mainly i am not in school, i work and thats all.

  3. The song that I chose was 3 A.M. by Matchbox 20. I chose this song mostly for the musical ability shown in it. The first thing that I notice when I listen to a song isn’t the lyrics. What hooked me with this is that it’s different from the released version. It takes an upbeat song and turns it into something that fits the message a little better. Also, the little speech that Rob Thomas does before that tells that was going through his mind when he wrote it which was completely different than what I thought.

  4. My favorite TV Show right now right now is the show 24. This show is awesome because it is incredibly fast paced and exciting. Watchin Jack Bauer struggle weekly against impossible odds and deal with the consequences of his decisions creates an emotional rollercoaster for the viewers. The show is filled with unexpected plot twists and over the top bad guys which keeps me on the edge of my seat. By far the coolest part of the show is that it unfolds in “real time” over the course of one day and the numerous story threads are intricately played out on screen at the same time.

  5. My current favorite TV show is Lifetimes ‘Army Wives’. This show strickes my interest because of the different types of ‘occasions’ that happen. The hsow doesnt show life as a cake walk, it shows different bumps in the road that familys and people encounter along the road of life. Its not like a typical show that is through the eyes of a ‘normal’ perosn, its throught the eyes of army wives that live on base. The show also shows how some husbands, when delpoyed, have to up and leave. It gives people a perspective as to what their families go through not knowing what is going on. It made me think of all the young men and women i know that are serving our coutry and what their life is alike.

  6. My favorite TV show has to be Smallville. Some might say I have an obsession. The show follows a young Clark Kent through highschool and into college, as he discovers the ups and downs of life in general along with the ins and outs of his own special abilities. The mix of everyday issues and totaly bizarre happenings keeps the audience intrigued and wondering what could possibly happen next. The ongoing struggle between good and evil makes the modern day look into the life of Superman, before he earned his cape a great retreat from the everyday activities of ones own life.

  7. My favorite show is the ABC drama Grey’s Anatomy. The show takes place at Settle Grace Hospital and depicts to the audience the reality of working in a fast-paced hospital setting. Not only does the show have amazing medical cases but it also continually builds on the friendships, romance and comfort that various coworkers provide to each other. By following the development and growth of the characters the show always leaves the viewer with an element of curiosity, suspense or drama. For example, the relationship between Derek and Mark, who were once best friends and now are working to rebuild their friendship which was once lost to infidelity, lies and betrayal. I favor this show because it shows that life and relationships are not always easy to define but often give us the strength to carry on.

  8. I don’t watch TV very often. But, last year I watched one show each week “House” about a sarcastic, self absorbed, rude, crass, sexist, quick witted, extremeley intelligent medical doctor. I loved the show. He was always moving, the show was fast, no slow moments. At times there were sentimental themes others were scary, still others were just bizarre being in the medical field it was just plain interesting. He was always on the edge of being unethical yet saving lives. Hugh Lauri and his cohorts together were a team medical MDs always trying to figure what rare condition was plaguing each patient. At times it was even each other on the operationg table at deaths door. It was personal in that the show brought you into their lives to see each ones point of dysfunction as well that became part of the web he wove as the plot thickened.

  9. The television show that I have been in love with for the past two years has been Scrubs, the medical comedy that likes to find great humor in a subject that has been primarily for the drama genre. The show began in 2001 focusing on two medical interns and one surgeon intern and has progressed to today where we find the young interns now full ledged doctors at Sacred Heart. I am yet to find an episode that I do no laugh hysterically at. Whether it is the physical comedy of star Zack Braff or the painfully funny verbiage of John C. McGinley portraying Dr. Cox, I am always enjoying the episodes and sad to find them end. What I think has hooked me to the show is not just the comedy but the ability of the show to go from hilarious one scene to heartfelt in another then heart-wrenching in the next. Scrubs is a perfect package for me all crammed into a half-an-hour slot on NBC.

  10. I very rarely find time to watch television with my awkward hours at work, and the lack of television channels, but when I do just so happen to find myself in front of a t.v I enjoy the show “Dirt.” The show “Dirt” is about a magazine editor (Courtney Cox) who is always digging up dirt on celebrities. The show always has some sort of twist that makes me keep watching and wanting to find out the latest gossip on the characters. I love this show because, even though the celebrities are just characters in the show, it still shows that everyone messes up once and awhile and everyone has skeletons in their closet. From the very first time I watched this show I was hooked and ended up going out to buy the entire season so I could find out what happened.

  11. My favorite T.V. series is the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. I used to watch this show with extreme envy of Will Smith. His smooth talking, stylish ways were my inspiration. I used to try and get out of trouble in the same manor he would. I quickly found out the difference between television and reality. I can remember sitting on my living room floor with my cousin waiting for “Fresh Time” as we used to call it. Rolling of the floor for half and hour laughing were some of the fondest memories of my youth. To this day, I hope that I will be able to pull off matching such vibrant colors in my clothing or the clean, crisp fade that crowned the Prince’s head.

  12. My favorite TV show is Extreme Makeover Home Edition. Ty Pennington along with his design crew choose a deserving family each week in a different state to rebuild their house and send them on vacation for one week. I love the idea to help needy families who suffer with different problems. My favorite part of the show is when they show the final house. Not only to see the specialized rooms for each child and the adult but mostly the looks on each one of their faces. You can see the hard times just lifting from their shoulders and the happiness returning. I always feel as if I want to do more for other people and help as much as I can after I watch this show. One of the most rewarding shows I have ever watched!!

  13. My favorite TV show would be Grey’s Anatomy. I have been watching this show for 3 years. The reason I think I like this show so much is because I am going to be a nurse, and someday soon hope to work in a big hospital helping people. I also like this show because is combines real life situations in the hospital, with the actors busy on and off duty schedule.

  15. I rarely find time to watch TV but one show that i have always liked and watched is Ghost Whisperer which i have been watching for about a year or so. The show is about a woman who can see ghosts and has to help them cross over. I find this show interesting because of the struggles that she and her husband have to go through just to keep it a secret. Also the reactions that people have when she tells them about a family member that had passed away not too long ago is still around and haunting them and others. And through them is the only way that she is able to get that ghost to cross over.
